Village show classes

2024 classes are now available!

Village show classes are open to both adults and young people, other than the exceptions listed below.

  • Young person classes are arranged by school year groups.

  • Men's cookery classes are to encourage potentially less proficient entrants.

Flowers

1.    Single stem specimen sweet pea.

Notes

  • Use fresh clean flowers and foliage in suitable sized containers.

  • Cut in the evening or early morning. Handle as little as possible and protect from draughts and bright sun.

  • Remove lower leaves and immerse stems up to their necks in water until the last minute.

  • On staging, trim off any damaged leaves or flowers, remove “bugs”.

  • Do not exceed the maximum space allowed or exceed the number of stems specified

  • A bowl is wider than high, a vase is taller than wide.

  • Pot plants must have been owned for a minimum of six months.

Notes

  • Lettuce: leave about 5 cm (2”) of root/stem.

  • Cabbages: show with the outside leaves intact.

  • Potatoes, carrots, beetroot: show on a plate.

  • Tomatoes: ripe but firm and with their stalks attached.

  • Carrots, beetroot, radishes: show with root attached.

Notes

  • Jams, marmalades, preserves etc. Show in clear glass jars full to the top covered with cellophane (not pickles/chutneys) or plain lids.

  • If using a cellophane cover, a wax disc must be used.

  • Label jars and include date made (month/year).  

  • Preserves containing vinegar must have a twist top only and must be at least two months old for showing. 

  • Please resist the temptation to open your jars before the show!

  • Preference will be given to items of own design if of similar quality. Please state if exhibit if from a kit.

  • Craft entries must be less than two years old.

  • Art entries should be less than three years old and have not previously won a prize in this show

  • Photographic entries must be less than two years old and must have been taken by the exhibitor but may have been [processed professionally?].

Notes

  • Young people can make entries in classes for older age groups and open classes.

  • Entries in each class must be substantially the work of the young person with minimal adult assistance.​

  • An ACROSTIC poem is where the first letter of each line, when read vertically downwards, spells out the name of a place in Buckinghamshire.

  • A collage is a picture assembled using a range of different materials such as tissue paper, feathers, ribbon, dried leaves/flowers etc.
